Help! Screwup needs a New Home!!!

topic posted Fri, February 29, 2008 - 10:29 AM by  offlineJ.
It's really not looking good for us at New College... They finally lost their accreditation the other day, and will likely be heading out soon. While other venues have been lovely about letting us drop in when we've been temporarily homeless in the past, none of them has the space to take us on in an ongoing way. So, we need a new place to meet, every second Tuesday, ongoing. it needs to be wheelchair accessible, kink friendly, inexpensive/free, and near public transit. If anyone has any ideas of who we could approach, please let me know a.s.a.p.!

There has been one suggestion for the center for Sex and Culture. Anyone have a contact there that they can follow up on?

Thanks,
J.W.

Of course that would be the second Friday of every month... from 7ish to 9ish.

    Thanks for posting this, J.

I checked in with Femina Potens and they're booked up for March.

    That's all I got.

I have been doing some venue research for a couple of kink organizations. I can tell you that the new CSC location, like the old one, is wheelchair accesible via a freight elevator, which means you have to coordinate to have a staff member there to run it. The Bank of America on Castro and 18th has a Community Meeting Room where some leather groups have meetings. It is accessible via a regular elevator.

    I thought I'd resurrect this thread ...

I've been talking with the folks at Femina Potens. They're willing to give us a discounted rate where, if we have at least 15+ folks, it'll be 1-2 bucks per person. They're doing their scheduling out for the next little bit and need a commitment from us.

    Benefits of FP:
-meets our basic space requirements (accessible, big enough, queer/trans friendly, etc)
    -we'd be supporting queer spaces,
-we'd have stability of location so we can take our organizing energy out of finding a space each month and put it into planning a party or having kickass programs
-in support of us, they've seriously lowered the price of rental space
-they are easy to work with and genuinely want to help us out

    Disadvantages:
    -not free

    Should I tell them yes?

I will likely tell them yes on Monday (4/10), unless I hear a strong resistance or free other alternative.

    Go hive go.

I haven't been to screwup in awhile, but it's an important thing. I'm willing to take care of the balance of space rental at FP since it sounds like rental is $30? Plus it's close to my house. :)

I would love to be at FP this month, a.s.a.p. so we can start promoting soon, and would be extremely happy if we could work out something on an ongoing basis with them, where we get every second Friday no matter what. Do you think they might go for it? So far, our other options have all been more expensive and less us friendly.

The Center can offer us a much smaller room at $15.00 per hour if this doesn't work out... but then we'll be paying app. $37.50, if we get out strictly on time.

Oh, and on the theme of money, I have $ 22.00 from the last event I hosted. Does anyone else have hat money to bring back? Anybody know if Justin is back in town yet?

      Cheers,
      JW
